Web Browsers

Testing

This web site is regularly tested against a range of web browsers and it is our intention to support as many of the commonly used browsers as possible. However some browsers do not support concurrent use of multiple versions, so for example it is only possible to install one version of Windows Internet Explorer on a PC at any one time.

It is therefore only practical to test against the current or very recent versions of the web browsers shown in the table below. The consequence of this is that other browsers or earlier versions of these browsers may give incorrect page rendering or may not support some features or not support them fully or correctly.

SymbolExplanation
*While the web site is tested regularly against the main browsers, the testing against the less commonly used browsers (marked '*' in the list below) occurs only occasionally, for example when there is a major revision of the web site or a major new release of the browser.
**In the case of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, this web site is tested against versions 7 and 8 using Microsoft SuperPreview and every reasonable attempt will be made to ensure that the web site will render correctly, however some compromises may be required. Dynamic content cannot be tested adequately in these earlier versions and support cannot be guaranteed. Testing is no longer carried out against version 6 and support for this highly problematic version is no longer possible.
Testing is carried out against the current full release of Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, but pre-release (beta test) versions cannot be supported.
MIt is currently only possible to fully test against browsers that run on Microsoft Windows - those that run exclusively on other operating systems currently cannot be tested. Cross-platform browsers in the list below are expected to work on other platforms in the same way that they work on Windows, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Apple Safari for Mac, however, is tested for static rendering, using Microsoft SuperPreview.

Whichever browser you choose to use, we strongly recommended for reasons of improved security and functionality that you ensure that you use the most recent version at all times.

Accessibility

Because of the wide range and cost of screen-reader software it is not practical to specifically test this web-site for compatibility. However all pages on this web site are tested against any relevant standards (currently WCAG 1.0) and this should ensure compatibility with the majority of screen-readers; Retesting against updated standards will be undertaken from time to time, to ensure continued compliance.

The choice and size of fonts is intended to help those with less severe vision problems and all font sizes will scale up or down, by using the appropriate browser settings. All pages will remain readable, even if all styling is disabled; however, some table data is likely to become difficult to read.

Printing from your Browser

Web browsers' support for printing is notoriously patchy, but has improved considerably during the past couple of years.

It is for this reason that most documents that are specifically intended for printing are made available as .pdf, Word or Excel files. With the help of specific styling for printers, most web pages will render consistently in most browsers and will look more like the standard KAA stationery (background images, navigation controls, sidebars and other content that is unnecessary in print are all excluded).

While we will do our best to ensure that you can print more-or-less any content, there are likely to be occasions where there is no satisfactory solution to printing problems.

Mobile Devices

No specific support is currently available for mobile web browsers, but with the increasing popularity of Windows Mobile, Symbian and Apple devices and the recent Google equivalent, it is planned to address this at a future date.

It is, however, necessary to bear in mind that testing against a wide range of mobile browsers and screen resolutions will provide a significant challenge and is potentially costly!

Known Issues

It is sometimes necessary to release a version of the web site while minor bugs are still present - this is to avoid having to maintain multiple versions for a prolonged period while development work continues. A list of known bugs will be maintained and worked through over a period of time.

The following issues have been identified:

Identified Issues:

000810 May 2011IE7Club map and list content is not displayed (2 reports, both using this browser version). Remainder of these pages renders correctly and other javascript functionality works correctly, so this appears to be an issue with specific javascript that is not compliant with this browser:
Check javascript in club-display.js.
The cause was a minor syntax error that is auto-corrected by newer parsers, but not in IE7. The syntax error has been corrected.

0006b05 May 2010SlimBrowser4.12Images inside tabbed parts of pages are not always displayed - the behaviour appears erratic:
This is either a rendering issue in the browser or the JavaScript used to create the tabs is not fully compliant.
The error is a rendering issue that affects only a couple of low-use browsers and for which the only work-around would be a substantial rewrite of affected pages - this is not considered a worthwhile cost.
LowClosed - unresolved

000516 Nov 2009IE7Rendering issue with in-page tabs - active tab still shows maroon line along lower edge:
Possibly incorrect alignment of ".tabbed-on .index" in style sheet "kaa-content.css" - try "top: -.1em" in "kaa-content-ie7fixes.css".
This is an old version of the browser with known box-model rendering quirks - this issue will therefore be closed, unresolved.

000416 Jun 2009AllAccented alphabetics and special symbols (e.g. copyright) are wrongly rendered in all browsers except Opera.
Incorrect "charset" specification in header, now corrected.

0003b14 Jun 2009Safari4.0The "Main Updates" table in the home-page side-bar renders incorrectly - the second column only renders for wide-screen mode, even when using normal display mode. This issue does not appear to occur in any other page.
The issue was not present in version 3.2 and only appeared in version 4.0, which appears to share its rendering engine with Google Chrome. The cause was the "min-width" attribute set for that table type, causing this browser to incorrectly set the entire table to that width; removal of the caption and an alternative styling method has been used to resolve the issue.

000231 May 2009Opera9.64The buttons in both navigation bars do not size correctly - this appears to be a rounding error when calculating 12.5% (8 equal width buttons across the full width) because Opera truncates %s to an integer value before making calculations.
A 2% boundary at each end of the navigation bars allows the eight buttons to occupy 12% each.
LowResolved
000131 May 2009Firefox3.0Printing pages with sidebar content render incorrectly: main page content follows the sidebar content instead of alongside.
Complete suppression of the sidebar does not completely resolve the issue, as Firefox throws a page after the masthead but before the main content. The current Firefox version is the only browser to show this problem and is quirky when printing a range of other websites - this issue will therefore be closed, unresolved.
